Doggie U needs You!
Volunteers needed to help shelter dogs become more adoptable

The Cherokee County Humane Society is looking for volunteers to help with an innovative program to train shelter dogs so that they will be better candidates for adoption.

Doggie U pairs shelter dogs with amateur volunteer trainers who provide them with basic training. This training focuses on basic obedience issues such as sit, stay, down, and come. It also provides an opportunity for the dogs to practice walking nicely on a leash.

The Cherokee County Humane Society is looking for volunteers to help with an innovative program to train shelter dogs so that they will be better candidates for adoption.

"Many people are impressed by a dog that knows basic manners," explains Gina Carr, the Director of Doggie University, the Cherokee County Humane Society's newest program. "Doggie U will help prepare dogs at the Cherokee County Animal Shelter for their new homes."

"We are very excited about this opportunity to partner with the Cherokee County Animal Shelter," said Felicia McAleer, president of the Cherokee Humane Society. "We believe that the basic obedience training that CCHS volunteers can provide will make shelter dogs more marketable. We also believe that this training will reduce the chances that the new owner will want to return the dog to the shelter for behavior issues."

Doggie U pairs shelter dogs with amateur volunteer trainers who provide them with basic training. This training focuses on basic obedience issues such as sit, stay, down, and come. It also provides an opportunity for the dogs to practice walking nicely on a leash. As a "student", the dog's run at the shelter is marked with a cheerful "Doggie U Student" sign that indicates that this dog is being trained. Dogs that have mastered these commands have their runs decorated with a "Doggie U Graduate" certificate.

The CCHS is looking for volunteers to act as instructors for Doggie U. Volunteers will need to commit at least two Saturdays per month that they can work at the shelter for an hour or two to train dogs. No experience in dog training is required.
